Waking up 2-3 times every night and can't fall asleep again under 30 minutes? - Sleep Maintenance Insomnia for thinker types
Waking up 2-3 times and not being able to fall asleep easily is a very common sleep struggle I see in my sleep coaching practice.
So many clients tell me about how they try so many things but it still takes them over 30 minutes or even over an hour to fall back to sleep. And there is no shortage of advice about what to do when you wake up.
Try listening to something, read something, get out of bed until you feel tired again, try a breathing exercise and so on... try, try, try...
But all of that trying only leads to training your mind to be awake first.
Nighttime wakings and disturbances that are regular is referred to as sleep maintenance insomnia, meaning that you're not able to to stay asleep. But I see so many versions of how thing becomes a sleep issues over time. Especially when it also links to being more of a thinker type person.
When it comes to the activity of the mind at night, I see four common scenarios in relation to nighttime wakings or disturbances. We'll go through each of them in this video, so we can properly break it down, giving you the best way to find more appropriate tools and techniques for your situation.
Trying isn't the answer, throwing every single sleep tip at this problem isn't the answer either.
Instead of constantly adding more tools, the goal is to understand the dynamics that show up when you wake up. When you learn what actually shows up and how your situation is different, you'll be able to see what you need in order to learn to fall back to sleep in a few minutes, and even train your body and mind to stop waking up all together.
This video is part of my video series on how to overcome long-term insomnia or sleep problems when you are more of a thinker type person.
We explore the bi-directional relationship between being more of an analytical or mentally active person and how sleep problems develop. I also talk about why you want to approach these sleep challenges differently and learn Sleep Skills for Life so you can finally overcome these issues. So check out the other videos in this series below.
Of course if you have any particular questions about waking up regularly in the middle of the night, feel free to reach out.
