I get asked about using earplugs or headphones to help overcome long-term or chronic insomnia and sleep problems every week. Whilst the answer to figuring out how this applies to you will be different, in today's video I’ll talk you through a couple of examples from my sleep coaching client work.
There has been a rise in earplugs advertised especially for sleep problems or noise sensitivity, and it’s quite often part of our work with clients.
Can using earplugs help you overcome your insomnia and sleep problems?
We have to start this conversation with noise sensitivity first. So this is naturally the first example I’ll share with you in my video today. If a client has an already existing noise sensitivity during the day, then approaching this question is not just about sleep problems but also about how they deal with noise or sounds during the day.
The second example I’ll talk through is when a client uses or wants to use earplugs because of a snoring partner or other normal noises at night that stop them from sleeping well. This is more often the case especially when a client struggles with long-term insomnia or sleep problems.
The third example is about situations when a client uses headphones as earplugs but also listens to something at night to help them distract their mind from thinking or overthinking. This is another very common situation that comes up in my sleep coaching practice. With the rise of technology and smaller earbuds, we started using sounds and other things to help with falling asleep easily. But it’s not always a reliable solution.
This sleep myth that earplugs or earbuds help you to overcome your sleep problems will therefore be just a smaller part of the answer depending on the sleep situation. Please don’t jump into a conclusion without truly looking at your personal situation and what might be causing you to use earplugs or earbuds at night.
