Why can't I fall asleep even when I'm tired or exhausted? When it takes 30 or more minutes, 3 or more nights a week for months
Why can't you fall asleep even when you're tired or exhausted?
If you've been struggling with long-term insomnia or sleep problems, feeling tired or exhausted doesn't always mean you're ready and able to fall asleep easily.
In this video, I look beyond the general idea that being sleepy, tired or exhausted should automatically lead to falling asleep. From a sleep coaching perspective, these experiences can mean very different things, particularly if you feel physically tired but mentally alert, have an overactive mind at night, or regularly feel exhausted at bedtime but still can't sleep.
Difficulty falling asleep isn't always about needing to become more tired.
Physical, emotional and mental tiredness can influence your transition into sleep differently, which is why it's important to understand what tiredness and sleepiness actually look like in your individual situation.
If you've had sleep onset insomnia or difficulty falling asleep for months or years, looking beyond general sleep advice can help you identify the patterns that are more relevant to you. Developing personalised Sleep Skills is about understanding what helps your body and mind transition into sleep consistently, rather than simply hoping that being tired enough will eventually make sleep happen.
This video is part of my series exploring why it can take so long to fall asleep, particularly for people in their 40s and 50s who have struggled with long-term insomnia or sleep problems.
If you're looking for insomnia help, sleep coaching or personalised support to fully overcome your long-term sleep problems, you can arrange a Sleep Assessment appointment through my website.
