My early years and what I learnt
I didn’t always know what I wanted to do with my life, although I keenly felt the need to decide before I was ready. As a person with many interests, from horse riding to painting, I was left with a BIG decision:
How do we do it ‘all’ ?
I grew up in Hungary; a place with strong work ethic and stoic attitude. Hungarians don’t rest when we are unwell – we pick ourselves up and keep going! I suppose this is similar to the famous British ‘stiff upper lip’. But whenever you come from, I think we could all benefit from a little more self-care and balance in our lives.
When I came to London on a gap year, I loved the fast pace of the city and all the opportunities for work and adventure. I am still here today and still love the city dearly. But my pace of life had to change when I became unwell.
In short, I tried to do too much and burned myself out. My symptoms manifested as sleeplessness and insomnia (even though I had never needed sleep more!), painful psoriasis and nighttime nosebleeds.
When you sleep well, you live well too
If you are burnt out, your symptoms will be unique to you, but may include some of the more common ailments we typically see in today’s stressed-out society. You might experience excessive headaches, lack of focus or even digestive issues.
Whatever the symptoms are, I am here to help you stop the problems at its source. Sleep is crucial to our wellbeing; meaning not just our physical health, but our mental health and enjoyment of life too. I’am talking about holistically – the whole package.
This is why I am so passionate about my work. At the end of the day, when the hustle has slowed down and we are getting ready to go to bed – don’t we all just want to feel relaxed and satisfied with the day we just had?
I love that I spend my days helping others live a better life by sharing what I learnt. These days I wake up refreshed and excited about the day to come, and I want the same for you too.
A few facts about sleep
Did you ever feel super-hungry after a sleepless night?
When we sleep we produce the hormone leptin, which suppresses our appetite. When we don’t sleep, and don’t produce enough leptin, then the ‘hunger hormone’ ghrelin takes over. This is why we crave sugar and carbs when we are over-tired.
Sleeping helps us to heal from illness and injury
Our hours spent asleep are when our immune system goes into repair mode. During the day, our bodies work to repel invading bacteria, and during the night different white blood cells are activated, and their job is to repair damage.
Confused about how much you should sleep?
The ideal length of a ‘good night’s sleep’ is not one-size-fits-all. Rather, it varies from person to person. Research suggests our ideal range varies (quite a bit) from 5 to 10 hours per night, with the average being 7.5 hours a night.
